Retail Operations

NRF Foundation has developed a dynamic instructor-led curriculum incorporating five core areas of accountability for the entry-level front-line worker. Based on nationally approved and validated industry-driven competencies in Customer Service and Sales and aligned with the Professional Certifications in Customer Service and in Sales, this curriculum is a strong stand-alone classroom resource, or it can be paired with online courses to create a robust blended-learning program. Overview of the Program

Geared towards recently hired associates, students, and interested retail associates and employees who need new skills, this 40-hour interactive instructor-led course is designed to help instructors prepare participants for a career in retail. This program is aimed at building the skills and knowledge of entry-level frontline workers, by providing  an overview of the retail industry, customer service, sales, and operational concepts. Delivered over a five-day period, or extended to meet your training
schedule, this course can be used as part of a blended learning program or a as semester-long classroom course.

The Retail Operations course includes both facilitator and participant guides, which are designed to be used together as part of a facilitated program.

Program Objectives

The program will work to develop the next generation of leaders in the retail industry.  Learners will master the areas of skill and knowledge they need to be successful in a frontline retail position.

Participants will learn to:
  • Understand the economics of retail
  • Recognize the importance of actively participating in company-provided product training as well as follow-up training
  • Review and understand sales goals
  • Understand the basic functions of Loss Prevention
  • Understand the basic functions of Inventory Control
  • Understand the basic functions of Safety
  • Understand the basic functions of Merchandising
  • Become adept at obtaining a retail job effectively communicating to a hiring manager
Retail Operations is the first level of a three level learning program.  Geared to the entry-level associate, successful completion of the Retail Operations program and work experience can prepare an individual for the Retail Management and Operations program, which addresses entry-level Management concepts for the new or emerging Manager.
